If you’re after for a holiday which will get you away from the stresses and strains of another winter spent under the cosh of the global economic crisis why not give some thought to the good old fashioned spa holiday?

The austere days of the old fashioned spa are gone where you tripped over to Harrogate or Buxton for a fortnight drinking the sulphurous waters and taking cold water treatments where you sat in a bath swaddled in blankets soaked in cold water for hour after hour.Although Harrogate and Buxton do still offer spa breaks they are completely different to the treatments of yesteryear, now they offer the same kind of luxury as you’d expect to find with any first class resort. If the winter weather’s an important factor and you’re a bit of a sun bird perhaps a spa holidays in Dubai would be more to your preference. I’m not knocking British spas but I know where I’d rather spend a frosty winter’s afternoon if relaxing after a hard day of being pressed and stretched on a massage table with a poolside cocktail and walking on beaches is your idea of a winter holiday. If you’re thinking of something a little less far flung then Europe spa holidays might be a little more to your liking. Head on over to a Greek isle or the Portuguese coast for a little winter sun and a lot of pampering. Or then again there’s the Sha Wellness Clinic in Spain. The resort’s a macrobiotic wellness spa centre set on the Sierra Helada hillside offering a blend of Eastern disciplines with contemporary Western techniques. Here there’s a freestyle spa where there’s an entire area explicitly set aside for circuit sessions in an aqua lab with underwater massage, resistance wall and jet stations around the pool. Steam and sauna sessions are combined with ice fountains and Kneipp paths which incorporate water and herbs to aid the detoxification process.
