A person is said to have Pneumonia when there is respiratory infection in one or both lungs.It can get afflicted de to many things like virus, bacteria, fungi etc. In the usual course there are organisms that exist in air causing infection.The mico-organisms gets transferred into the blood stream of the lungs when a person breathes.As a result of this the protein outflow in the alveoli gets reduced having a negative impact on the movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide.There is excessive formation of mucus in the alveoli due to this.It again become hard over a period of time. 

The common pneumonia symptoms include cold followed by high fever and shaking chills.One has dissemination of saliva in blood like color.The patient also experiences shortness of breath followed by clammy skin.In some cases, patient also experiences chest pain which is worsen on deep breathing.Other associated symptoms are headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bodyache, fatigue and lethargy. 

There are many types of pneumonia.Bacterial pneumonia are those which is caused by bacteria.The streptococcus pneumonia is the one that is usually affected.When a virus causes it, then it is Viral pneumonia. Atypical pneumonia are caused by different organisms like legionella pneumophila, chlamydophila pneumoniae and mycplasma pneumoniae.There is Aspiration pneumonia when a person inhales vomit, food, drink or mouth secretions along with foreign material. 

It is a misnomer that pneumonia is infectious.This is in fact not right.It is in reality the bacteria or the virus that is communicable and not the pneumonia disease.The ones that do not have resistance are more prone to get this disease.As infection is always present in air, but only some get the infection and becomes diseased.

The patients health background is checked before the start of pneumonia treatment.It assists in the identification of the causes easily.The other diagnostic feature is presence of additional sounds like rales, bubbling or crackling sound when heard through stethoscope.On percussion, there is presence of dull thrud in case of pneumonia.A very crucial test is the test of the sputum.The color and texture of this is tested.Chest x-ray is also taken into consideration. 

The usual treatment of pneumonia is done with antibiotics.Some of the antibiotic prescribed in case of pneumonia are clarithromycin, erythromycin, azithromycin, Tetracyclines like doxycycline etc.Other medications include use of medicines such as Penicillins like amoxicillin, ampicillin, ticarcillin, clavulanate.The factors that the medical practitioner gives importance while treating a pneumonia patient is his age, indications and gravity of the disease .

The management which are involved in the treatment of pneumonia is avoiding from alcohol and smoking. A person with pneumonia is advised to get as much rest as possible along with taking lot of fluids.It is only diagnosis that helps in its effective treatment. Right diagnosis at an early stage is very important for an speedy recovery.
