H1N1 flu preparedness is taking on a huge importance for families with school aged children or younger. This strain of swine flu is apparently targeting otherwise healthy kids ages 6 months to 24 years old. While thankfully the attacks have been mild and similar to seasonal flu, far more people are expected to contract the disease and that is going to change the way people adapt to it.

Families should focus on planning for prevention, treatment, information and possible logistical problems.

Smart families will:

  • Talk up the plan with their family. Educate everyone in the basics of prevention and discuss what each of you can do to prevent becoming infected outside the home.
  • Keep the home clean. Place sanitizer wipes near each phone, computer keyboard and shared bathroom and wipe them down before each use.
  • Explain to younger kids that if they get the flu they probably won’t get the hugs and kisses they expect. Make sure they understand you love them and it’s not personal it’s just the germs they are carrying.
  • Stock up on hand gel and make sure each family member carries it on them and uses it frequently.
  • Figure out how you are going to care for a family member if they become sick. How many sick days do you have left? Can you telecommute? Does your company have special policies in place to accommodate this pandemic? How will this affect you financially?
  • Consider a mutual aid pact with a neighbor or relative who can care for sick kids. They take care of the kids and you supply food and other items. This will greatly reduce the odds of the rest of your children becoming infected.
  • With absenteeism being predicted to be 35% or greater, delivery of goods and services may be affected. Stock up on food and supplies just as if you were expecting an earthquake or hurricane.

A family that is well prepared is going to have a much easier time getting through this flu season. The vaccine won’t be here until the middle of October and there are no assurances that it will even work. Prepare today before you have a case of the flu in your home.
