Is Depression Really Just Being LAZY?

No. There is a difference between being lazy and being depressed. Wanting to do something, but not being able to, is linked to depression. Sitting on the lounge having beer and chips, and someone asks for something to be done, but not wanting to – is more likely being lazy.

Give yourself a break, you are allowed to rest if you are feeling off colour. Anything you do to help bring your body back into balance, is worthwhile – because then you will be better able to do whatever you actually want.

If you are already in the throes of depression, there are probably already several things you are not doing anymore. You know what they are, such as household chores, personal grooming, appointments, paying bills, and catching up with friends.

People telling you to get up and do things may have good intentions, as far as trying to get your mind off issues. The temporary diversion may in fact be very therapeutic for you. There are many beneficial strategies that are worthwhile knowing and using when needed, such as exercising, talking, networking, and of course, self programming.

What other people, and worse still, you, may not realise – is that if you have been doing things normally before – there must be a reason why you have suddenly lost the desire to do things. You don’t just suddenly change personality and become lazy. Isn’t it obvious that you are not happy, no matter how much you may try to not let on.

If friends come around and take you shopping, or to a party, or bring some goodies with them, and stay and keep you company for several hours – you might be happy. These are great both for happiness, and to get you back closer to a more balanced state.

Unfortunately, this is like going to a hypnotist, and letting them control your mind and actions. Depression doesn’t evaporate, and others can’t be expected to carry it for you – it is your luggage, and you are the only one who can remove it. Fortunately, you can successfully get rid of it yourself, without relying completely on a psychiatrist and hypnotist.
