Somewhere along the piercing path, you may encounter an infection. It happens to the best of us. Infections are the most commonly reported complication with body piercings. With proper care, you can significantly reduce your chances of infection Nonetheless, infections do happen and you should know how to treat them.

Symptoms: How do I know it’s an infection?
Common symptoms are increased pain, redness, and swelling. You may also feel heat at the piercing site. The discharge will be thicker than usual and might be yellow, green, or grey with an unusual odor.

What should I do?
The most important rule is- don’t remove the jewellery. By removing the jewellery, you allow the piercing to close over the infection resulting in a worse problem- an abscess beneath the skin.

Consult with your physician or piercer. In some cases, the piercer will be able to advise you on the proper steps to heal the infection. In other cases, you’ll need to see a doctor for oral antibiotic treatment. Watching for problems and responding quickly will help prevent small problems from turning into large ones.

Note: If the infection is in a nose or septum piercing, see a physician right away.

Other information
The following information is not intended to replace a visit to your piercer or doctor.

The easiest way to treat an infection is the application of a hot compress. Hold a clean cloth or paper towel under hot running water (the heat should be as hot as can be tolerated). Hold the compress on the infection until you feel the heat dissipate. Then remove the compress and wash the infection with warm salty water. Repeat this process until all residue is removed.

Keep the jewellery in at all times as it acts like a drain.

To promote the healing, take care (and more care than usual) to wash your hands, keep the infected area clean, avoid manipulating the jewellery, and keep your sheets and clothing clean and fresh.
