Those unnerving eye twitches and painful mouth ulcers may seem like little glitches – they’re annoying but you can bear them. But you have to know that they’re actually signs that tell you things aren’t quite right in your body.
Here’s how you can decode these oddities and get your health back on track.
Condition: Eye Twitch.
What your body is saying: You’ve been putting too much stress on your peepers. Starting at you computer for hours can irritate eye tissue, triggering lid spasms. The common causes are fatigue, stress, corneal irrtitation due to dust or an allergy, or even caffeine.
What to do: Rest your eyes and get an eye check if the twitching persists. If the twitching comes with frequent headaches, you may need glasses. Get proper rest and cut back on caffeinated drinks. Eye twitching could indicate an eye infection or facial nerve irritation. These would have accompanying symptoms, so the patient has to consult a doctor for advice.
Condition: Dandruff.
What your body is saying: When you miss a day or two of shampooing, yeast builds up. With some people, that accumulation can lead to inflammation, and this can cause itchiness and flaking. Genes and stress may also factors.
What to do: To battle dandruff, wash your hair daily, alternating a medicated shampoo that contains ingredients like selenium sulfide or zinc or ketoconazole, and a mild shampoo. If there are no improvements, consult a dermatologist, who’ll prescribe a non – greasy corticosteroid solution for the inflammation. Refrain from pomades or hail oil, which may aggravate the condition.
Condition: Bad Breath.
What your body is saying: Your mouth has been taken hold of by bacteria. Although bad breath may be caused by certain foods, the bacteria in your mouth is also to blame. As the bacteria break down food, they excrete smelly chemicals. The long term build – up of food and bacteria around the teeth can also cause bad breath.
What to do: Importance of regular brushing, flossing and dental cleaning. Mouthwashes are just a temporary measure. However, if you’re diligent about dental hygiene and your bad breath persists, consult your doctor. This is not common, but gastrointestinal problems or diseases like diabetes can show up as mouth odours.
Condition: Mouth Ulcers.
What your body is saying: It’s time to give your body a break. Mouth ulcers can be triggered by viral or bacterial causes, hormonal changes, or allergies to certain foods or oral hygiene products such as toothpaste or mouth rinse. Mouth ulcers could even indicate a nutritional vitamin deficiency or an immune – deficient medical problem.
What to do: Be aware of when your ulcers hit you and try to assess their triggers (like an allergy). To numb the pain, mouth – soothing gels such as Bonjela. Swishing with normal saline (salt water) will help too.
Condition: Sensitive Teeth.
What your body is saying: Loosen that grip – you’re brushing too hard. Overzealous brushing weakens tooth enamel and separates gum tissue from the teeth. This reduces the nerves’ protection from hot and cold foods. Teeth sensitivity can also be due to grinding, cracks in the teeth or leakage along the margin lines of dental restorations. Your dentist can find out whether the problem is generalised or associated with a particular tooth.
What to do: Tooth enamel can be protected from further wear and degradation through topical flouride treatments. Your dentist can also protect the sensitive area with a tooth – coloured filling. At home, use a sensitivity toothpaste.
