As surely as our eyes are windows to the soul, so our tongue has to be the window to our state of health.

Many meridian lines run through the tongue. That is why the tongue gives us valuable information on organ function. During times of sickness, the tongue will appear duller and have a different colour and texture.

Here’s what to look out for when you say “ah” in front of the mirror:

1. Red Patches
A healthy tongue should be a pinkish – red. Red patches represent a problem. If the tip of the tongue is red or spotted, the person could be having respiratory problems. If the front third of the tongue is red, it could signal hyperthyroid activity, heart problems or PMS symptoms.”
Redness on the sides indicate liver or gall bladder problems. I recommends a liver herbal such as milk thistle. A dry mouth in addition to a red tongue shows stomach problems or a bacterial infection of the blood. Try herbals like echinacea.

2. White Coating
A healthy tongue has a thin coating, but a thick coating indicates a weak immune system or an acute infection. It means that the body is getting too “cool”. This could be caused by metabolic problems and symptoms include fatigue, inability to concentrate, edema or body aches. A yellowish coating could signify digestive problems.
Try herbal formulas for the lungs like mullein, and adopt a diet that includes warm, bland food and herbs like licorice or lotus root

3. Cuts
The deeper the cut, the more chronic the problem. Any crack deeper than 2 mm is a serious condition and must be given attention right away.
Cracks down the centre towards the back is due to poor kidney function, while cracking near the centre is due to stomach problems.
Cracks running horizontally across the tongue in the middle section may also indicate possible kidney problems, while cracks along the edges may indicate a spleen problem. Taking asparagus extracts, digestive enzymes and B Complex may be useful.

Taste Your Emotions.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, different parts of your tongue indicate problems in certain organs. Each organ is also linked to an emotion.

Tongue Organ Key Emotion
Front third of the tongue Lungs Grief
Heart Shock or joy
Middle third Liver Anger
Stomach Disgust
Gall Bladder Resentment
Spleen Inferiority
Inner third Kidney Fear
