Breast Cancer can strike anyone – and Kylie Minogue is living proof. The Australian star shocked the world when she announced she was postponing her Showgirl world tour due to breast cancer. Fans were stunned as Kylie, at 37, seemed too young to have the disease.

It’s one of the many misconceptions about breast cancer, the most common cancer affecting women. Although this disease is most common in women aged 50 to 59, younger ladies like Kylie are not immune – especially since new studies show that breast cancer found in a younger woman is often more aggressive as it can grow faster and seems more likely to recur and spread.According to Harvard School of Medicine researchers, doctors know that by the time breast tumours are discovered in young women, they tend to be larger and often more advanced. Scientists have also discovered that while older women’s cancers are usually driven by hormones, young women’s are more likely to be stimulated by unknown factors.

That’s why learning the fact about breast cancer, knowing the symptoms, and doing regular breast self – exams are crucial.

Protect Yourself Now
1. Exercise.
The American Cancer Society says you should work up a sweat for 30 minutes at least five times a week. Consistency and duration, not intensity, matters most.

2. Eat Smart.
Eat nutrient – rich foods like berries, flaxseed, dark leafy vegetable and garlic. According to researchers, drinking green tea may help as it contains an antioxidant that may slow tumour growth. Fibre helps block oestrogen’s ability to stimulate out – of – control cell growth.

Use these tips:
a. Eat less red meat and animal fat (including dairy fat), which increase circulating oestrogen. Fish, fruit and vegetables have the opposite effect. Soy foods and flaxseed help too.

b. Don’t consume more than two alcoholic drinks a week. This helps your liver regulate oestrogen levels.

c. Try a daily supplement with vitamins C and E, and selenium.

3. Shed Extra Kilos.
The World Health Organisation says between a fifth and a third of all breast cancers are related to excess weight. It’s because fat cells affect oestrogen levels.

4. Baby Bonus.
Consider having children, preferably before the age of 30. Breastfeeding also protects against breast cancer as it suppresses ovulation and oestrogen production for months. Aim to breastfeed for 15 to 18 months if you can.

What You Must Do Now
To detect any changes in your breasts, do a breast self – examination every month and your gynaecologist do a clinical breast exam annually.

Yearly mammograms are highly recommended for women aged 40 to 49, and those over 50 should go twice a year. However, mammograms tend to be less effective for women below 40. Young breast are dense, and both cancer and dense tissues appear white on the mammogram. This makes it difficult to detect the cancer in denser breasts.  Ask for an ultrasound instead.
