1. 10 mins. Start your day right : Open the windows to let in fresh air, take a few deep breath then do stretching exercise. To open your lungs and stretch muscles in your upper body, try a simplified yoga Warrior lunge. Stand straight, legs together, arms at your sides. Breathe in and step forward with your left leg bent as you stretch you arms upward. Breathing out, stretch till you fill a pull in your lower back. Breathe in and return to start position. Repeat three times each side.

4. 15 mins. Soak in some sunshine : Excessive sun exposure damages skin, but a moderate amount of gentle morning sun raises production of serotonin and norepinephrine, natural uppers your body makes to lift your mood and energy levels. Sunlight also helps the body create vitamin D – vital for calcium absorption. Just 15 minutes daily is enough so your morning walk to the bus stop will do.

5. 20 mins. Boost your body confidence : Stand naked in front of your mirror. Think of all the good things each body part does for you – and use a positive way to describe it. So, even if you normally think your hips are “too large”, tell yourself your hips are “lovely and curvy and make childbirth easier”. Studies show these “affirmations” make you feel positive.

6. 5 mins. The anti – tiredness acupressure point lies between the bones leading to your big and second toes. To find the point, slide your thumb up your foot, about four finger – widths towards your ankle. Get close to the end of the groove between the tendons. To release energy, press firmly and slide your thumb down the groove toward toes. Exhale as you do this. Do four times on each foot (from Energy Booster Workout by Simon Brown, Newleaf Publications).

7. 30 mins. Be a beach baby. Walking in the soft sand is a great way to tone calves and legs – and it lifts your spirit. Susie Galvez, author of Ooh La La! Perfect Body (MQ Publications) points out, “Running in and out of the waves is good for the feet as salt water contains marine extract as well as minerals that help soothe and smooth the skin through gentle exfoliation.”

8. Live for now : Are you keeping that expensive perfume for a special date? Or saving that sexy lingerie for a romantic trip? Why wait for tomorrow – make yourself feel special every day.

9. 5 mins. Computer smarts : We have a zillion thoughts every minutes  of the day – most of them negative. This negative inner chatter holds you back from success. For daily positive messages, subscribe to an e – newsletter at www.yourdailyaffirmation.com or www.gems4friends.com .

10. 5 mins. The power of touch : Get a loved one  to give you a hug, hold your hand, brush your hair, rub your feet, or message your shoulders. Then return the favour. Stroking your pet helps too – studies show that a 10 – minute cuddle with a pet lowers blood pressure.

11. 30 mins. Spark brain cells : Learning new skills keeps the mind sharp – experts in ageing and Alzheimer’s Disease recommend keeping our brains stimulated with puzzles and games, and learning new skills. So, pop into your CC to sign up for that language or art class. You’ll be stimulated in more ways than one.

12. 5 mins. Stressed? Calm down with this simple candle meditation trick : keep  your gaze on a candle flame for up to a minute, trying not to blink. Close your eyes and see the flame in your mind. When the image has faded, open your eyes. Do this three times (From Va Va Voom! Yoga by Susannah Marriott, MQ Publications).

13. 10 mins. Colour Your life : Get out that pink sundress that’s been hiding in the back of your wardrobe. There’s nothing like a chirpy colour to bring on a smile.

14. 5 mins. Sprinkle on seaweed : It’s especially rich in minerals. Kikkoman’s Food Forum Vol 17 shows it helps restore energy by nourishing the nervous, immune and hormonal systems. So add it to porridge or soups.

15. 30 mins. Lower your standards : Leave the bed unmade, floor unmopped or phone unanswered as you devote 30 minutes to yourself. Just relax and feel happy.
