Iron-Deficiency Anaemia

Iron deficiency is a common problem among women. This is because women lose blood during menstruation and not eat iron-rich foods or iron supplements during this time. Iron is an essential element, not only for women, but also for men and children. Infants require around 6 milligrams of iron daily, whereas expecting mothers require around 30 milligrams of iron daily. Iron store in your bodies gets depleted maximum during Pregnancy, breast-feeding, and smoking. Iron quantity is also affected due to various health problems such as ulcers or cancer.

Deficiency of Folic Acid

This deficiency occurs due to low intake of folic acids in your regular diet or absorption problems. The requirement of folic acids doubles up during pregnancy. This needs to be met by dietary supplement of 400 micrograms of folic acid per day. This is also essential at the time of planning your pregnancy. The adequate levels of folic acids in your body during conception helps in reducing the occurrence of birth defects such as low birth weight, neural tube defects, called spina bifida in babies.

Ways to counter Iron Deficiency.

In case of iron deficiency anemia, following measures help:

* Make green leafy vegetables an integral part of your diet.
* Increase the intake of red meat, beef liver, fish, eggs, oysters, dry fruits, high iron food supplements such as cereals.
* Eat fruits and vegetables that give you lots of Vitamin C such as tomatoes and oranges. Vitamin-C promotes absorption of iron from the food stuff.
* Reduce drinking tea as it can reduce the power of absorption of iron in the body.
* Avoid Phosphates found in beer, soft drinks, ice-creams as these block the absorption of iron.

In case of Folic acid deficiency anemia, you should start taking a folic acid supplement daily. Eat vegetables that are a rich source of Folic acid, such as asparagus, sprouts, spinach, lettuce, and broccoli. Also make black-eyed peas, orange juice, oatmeal, whole grain cereals, wheat germ, liver, and organ meats an essential part of your diet.
