Like everyone else I am worried and concerned about the highly contagious virus called Swine Flu. (no technical terms here) However, when you go onto the internet for information there are so many articles about this virus that are either too technical for the normal person to understand, or are downright scaremongering. So I have been looking at the main facts and I have tried to simplify them so that we, the general public, whether it is Uncle Sam or Joe Public can understand them and I have tried to outline them in plain English in this simple report.

What is Swine Flu?

1) Swine flu virus is thought to have originated back in 1930 when it was isolated from a pig. The swine flu did not normally infect people unless you were in contact with pigs. This new virus does infect and spreads from person to person and is highly contagious. That is all one needs to know. No layperson wants fancy technical numbers and descriptions.

One question asked is how can you differentiate swine flu from the normal seasonal flu.

2) The answer is, it is difficult. Symptoms of swine and seasonal flu are similar. They include fever, sore throat, aching body, and headache cough, shaking body, a feeling of being worn out, although apparently this flu seems to be coupled with vomiting and diarrhea, but there is no hard fast rule.

What should I do?

3) If I think I have swine flu, what should I do? When should I see my doctor? If you have flu like symptoms, here are simple guidelines. a) Stay at home, and keep warm. b) Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, when you cough or sneeze. c) Throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands. That will help prevent your flu from spreading. d) Regularly clean hard surfaces, door handles, worktops etc. e) Make sure you have some flu buddies around that will help you if you fall ill. f) Drink plenty of honey, lemon, whisky, or bourbon, or just honey and lemon in hot water. (It may not cure anything but by god it makes feel you good!) Contact your doctor a.s.a.p, but please only by phone. Do not go into the surgery unless specifically told.

People at Risk

4) The people at risk of becoming seriously ill from this virus are as follows: People with chronic kidney disease, chronic lung disease, chronic liver disease and chronic heart disease. People with diabetes, Pregnant women, People aged 65 years and older, and young children under five years old.

How dangerous is it?

5) Unfortunately there have been some real tragic deaths, starting in Mexico and rapidly moving to other countries including the US. However, it seems that a lot of these deaths apart from Mexico have been previously seriously ill and this virus as shortened their lives. It does seem that early doses of an anti-viral drug such, as Tamiflu, or Relenza seems to be effective in assisting recovery.

Can I catch it twice

6) I have been alarmed at the growth of these so-called Flu parties, where people deliberately give the flu to their neighbor or friend. How stupid can you get? Do they not realize that becomes somebody gets the flu in spring that they are not going to get it in winter. Fine you may become immune to it, or have some cross protection but what if the strain mutates or changes and you become ill again because the body does not recognize the new virus. Be sensible stay away from people until you are fully recovered.

Can Children take the anti- viral Drug Tamiflu

7) Yes they can from the age of one upward and even in children under 1 year old but only in very tiny doses. It may make them feel sick for a short time as nausea is a side effect, but if taken with or straight after food and drinking plenty of liquid should lessen the effect.

Can my pet catch swine flu?

8) There is no evidence at present that pets can catch this flu. The flu virus appears to be passing only from person to person or from human to pig. After all normal seasonal flu is not passed on to dogs and cats from their owners.

Recovery Time

9) When you have fully recovered from the virus. What do you do? Make sure you get plenty of rest Try and stay at home as much as possible without ruining your social life. but be a responsible person. Get plenty of sleep. The body needs to fully recover and recharge itself. Preferably keep away from elderly relatives for the time being. They are the most vulnerable, especially in winter and even if you think you are fully recovered be specially careful when visiting them.

Can we do anything to prevent it?

10) The sad fact is that most of us are going to be infected by this virus at some time in the next few months, but we can strengthen our immune system to counteract it. The following might help:

Make sure you drink plenty of liquid, but not alcohol!

Take Echinacea as this stimulates the immune system

Vitamin C

Garlic in tablet form and Zinc tablets.

Some people swear by homeothpathy so that may be worth a try.

I hope you find this article helpful. The main thing is we should stay positive, look after ourselves, our friends etc and try and maintain healthy lifestyle so that when we get the strain we can over come it very quickly and get on with our lives until the next trauma. Ah that’s life for you! Hadrian
