Diabetes has become a big problem for a large percent of the population. Diabetes Mellitus or DM is an endocrine disorder which involves primarily the pancreas. It has become one of the most common diseases to affect American adults. Though this disorder is prevalent among the adult or geriatric individuals, diabetes in kids happens far more often than you would expect.

Diabetes Mellitus is the medical term for this endocrine disorder which is characterized by a problem with blood sugar level and the amount of insulin produced by the body. The beta cells within the Islets of Langerhans are the primary source of insulin for the body. If anything goes wrong with the function of the beta cells of the pancreas it will render a disruption in the level of insulin in the blood. Diabetes in kids has the same pathophysiological characteristics as adult onset diabetes or Type II diabetes.

Juvenile diabetes is also known as type 1 diabetes. This is the less common type of diabetes which occurs among children. Only about ten percent of the total number of diabetes patients belongs to this type of the disease. Juvenile diabetes is basically a condition in which the body’s defense system attacks and damages its very own cells.

Insulin is a very important part in the energy processing of our body. This type of hormone produced in the pancreas serves as “passport” for glucose to penetrate the cell membranes of the body so that it can be used as fuel for the body processes which takes place. Glucose that penetrates to these various cells becomes energy. The hormone insulin therefore is crucial in our daily activities because without it we cannot endure to move about for several hours in day. Aside from that, insulin keeps blood glucose level low. Glucose that remains in our blood for a long period of time can result to a severe increase in our blood sugar level which eventually destroys our body cells in the form of complicating diseases.

Despite the advanced stage of technology we are in, the exact cause of juvenile diabetes remains an unknown realm for medical scientists. Health experts says that Diabetes in kids is autoimmune type of disorder which means it destroys itself. No further discovery has been associated with this disease. Thus, the accurate and definite cause of the disease is still a mystery to us, though we already have somewhat accepted beliefs on it.

Among the diagnosed juvenile diabetes patients certain risk factors have been found. Knowing these risk factors can be a significant guide in our serious battle against this health condition. Diabetes in kids can greatly affect the day to day living of children. It takes a strong social support and family assistance to help these kids cope with their condition. This disorder can be managed to allow the kids to live a happy and normal life.
